One does not need to wait for the stars to align before taking the steps to build a church; however, it is important that care is taken in its formation. With every step taken in the creation and subsequent operation of the church, it is absolutely imperative to keep at heart the instruction from Colossians 3:17—"And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.". Below, I will outline several key reasons for this approach, though this list is not exhaustive:

Financial Structure and Stability: Most banks require proper structuring and setup of the church to open an account. For some banks, this means that you will need even more than the bare minimum of simply being officially registered in the state but you may also need to have established bylaws and at least one documented board meeting.

Financial Security: Establishing things properly reduces the capacity for any financial malfeasance by those with ill intent. If, for example, your members bring in a pastor to lead the church who has less than stellar scruples, a well-established structure would prevent the pastor from turning the church's funds into a personal bank account.

Organizational Backbone: Having sound bylaws and constitution for your church provides for efficient financial stewardship, robust organizational structure, effective leadership, scheduling, ministry operations, and more. It provides the backbone for your ministries from a financial and organizational standpoint. Having a firm foundation sets the groundwork for everything else in your church. Without it, you risk having an unorganized mess with no real structure, hindering your ability to serve effectively. A firm foundation is essential for the church's overall functionality and effectiveness.

Retaining and Empowering Members: A precise organizational structure helps to retain and to empower church members. Although flexibility is essential for growth, structure provides stability and consistency in serving your congregation. Members will be made to feel and to know that they are not just faces in seats but members of a family, imbued with the agency to play whatever role necessary for the church's protection and success. Empowered members feel valued and make meaningful contributions to the church.

Matthew 5:14-16: Lastly, but certainly not least, you must remember Christ's encouragement: "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." In contrast, every blunder that results from failure to set up appropriately presents an opportunity for others to besmirch the church and tarnish its reputation.

These points are important to reflect on whether you’re starting a new church or improving an existing one. Proper prior preparation prevents poor performance.

"Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord guards the city,
The watchman stays awake in vain."
Psalm 127:1

Starting a church is not for every body. If it is not your call, do not answer. Let the LORD guide you to your ministry and do not grow weary in doing good for surely you will reap in time. In Jesus name. Amen!

Which, if any, are established at your church?

   [object Object] *
     State RegistrationBylawsConstitutionBoard of TrusteesTax-ID / EINAll or some but I do not know for certain

 			 			 			 			 			 			 				Submit
